See God Move: Advent 2024 Experience

Week Three, JOY

Welcome back to the See God Move Advent devotional! We lean in to light the pink candle of Joy on the Advent wreath this week. If you are new to the celebration of Advent, this is a period of four weeks where people of faith anticipate the birth of Christ. Advent comes from the Latin word adventus, which means “coming” or “arrival.” We carve out these four weeks to wait in wonder for the coming of Immanuel, God with us. We light candles and linger over the words of Scripture.

At our house, our schedule has more spaces to breathe and be together around the table at the same time. We talk about the four themes of the Advent weeks: hope, peace, joy, and love. We lament and laugh and lose track of time on these longer winter nights.

My desire is to offer something simple to engage your senses and your heart while encouraging you to meet with God weekly. You might read these devotionals on Advent Sunday evenings with your family or on your own when it’s convenient. You might press play on the audio and listen while you’re walking, decorating your tree, or as you are commuting. Give yourself permission to enter into this experience with grace. It’s not about checking boxes; it’s about moving to see God.

Each week I will include a few Bible passages that will be unpacked in the Reflection. I have also compiled a collection of music that helps our hearts delve deeper into the “See God Move” theme. I suggest downloading the free app Spotify to your device or logging in through your computer. 

Each week’s experience concludes with a few reflection questions that you might use for discussion around the table or to journal on your own. I hope these will be a bridge to invite you into the week’s theme and allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you in your specific context. Let’s see God move together!
